Gigio Donnarumma and the top players unwanted by their clubs

18/08/2025

As the summer transfer window opens, clubs will buy and sell players at will as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.

Every top team in European football wants the best squad to work with and ensure they are in top shape ahead of the new season.

Fans who buy Premier League tickets are excited about the new season because most teams in the competition have done well in improving their options so far.

Every top side in the league has some new faces, making it harder to predict which club will be the champions at the end of this season.

As new faces arrive, it usually means that some of the older players will have to leave these clubs because they are no longer guaranteed game time at their present teams.

In the next few weeks, some top players will change clubs, but there are already a group of stars who are unwanted by their clubs, while others want out.

Why do clubs tell players to leave?

If you have followed football for a long time, you would have noticed that some clubs often ask their players to leave sooner rather than later.

These decisions are not taken at the various clubs for the same reasons, and sometimes they seem harsh.

One reason clubs ask players to leave is when they now have a bloated squad. This has been the case at PSG before now.

The Parisians realised they had ended up with so many unwanted players after years of spending and had to tell some to leave.

Clubs could also end up asking players to leave when the manager says they do not fit into his system and he needs a replacement.

Different coaches have different demands, and when a new gaffer comes to town, he wants to stamp his authority on the squad and will demand for players based on his specifications, so those who do not fit will have to leave.

Players are also asked to leave if the manager thinks they have a discipline problem. As an example, Yves Bissouma is expected to leave Tottenham because he arrives late too often.

While every player’s future at a club is decided by so many reasons, a player will always be asked to leave the club if a replacement has been sorted and the coach wants to trim down his squad.

In this campaign, some players are clearly no longer wanted at their clubs. Some have been told about it, while others can read the message on the wall, and we expect them to try to leave.

In this article, we cover players who are expected to change clubs because they are no longer an important part of their coach’s plans.

Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea

Mikel Obi has long believed that Jackson is not the striker that Chelsea needs, and the Blues now want to replace him.

Before the Club World Cup, they added Joao Pedro to their squad, and the Brazilian is now a starter who takes the place of Jackson.

Chelsea will sell more Champions League tickets with the squad they have now, and Jackson must leave if he wants to get game time.

Christopher Nkunku, Chelsea

Nkunku will likely feel his move to Chelsea was a career mistake that he should never have made, because since he arrived at the club, he has not been given a chance to show himself.

Enzo Maresca made some bold decisions to get his team in shape and to start winning trophies, and one of them seems to be sidelining Nkunku.

He is now being linked with a move away, and he is a top player who can make any club stronger.

Jadon Sancho, Manchester United

Despite reaching a European final in each of his last two seasons, Sancho is still struggling to find a new club.

He has not been in the plans of Manchester United in the last two seasons, and he is another top-quality player who has been asked to leave his club.

Antony, Manchester United

Antony dazzled for the Real Betis team in La Liga and the Europa Conference League last season, and we expected him to have found a new club by now.

The Brazilian appears set for an entire season on the bench unless something changes and he attracts a new suitor in the coming weeks.

Alejandro Garnacho, Manchester United

We did not expect Garnacho to be one of the losers as Ruben Amorim became the Manchester United manager.

Over the last few seasons, the attacker has proven to be one of the best players in their squad and has continued to work as hard as he can to impress.

But he fell out with his coach after the Europa League final, and he has now been told to leave, with Chelsea working on a deal to sign him.

Arthur Melo, Juventus

The trajectory of Arthur’s career changed for the worse as soon as he swapped Barcelona for Juventus, and he has spent some time out on loan recently.

He did well at Fiorentina and Girona, but he is now completely out of favour in Turin, and we hope he gets a permanent home soon.

Nicolas Gonzalez, Juventus

Gonzalez was one of the exciting names that Juventus added to their squad ahead of the 2024/2025 season as they wanted to support Thiago Motta’s decision to bin some experienced players.

He had been fantastic at Fiorentina, but he did not do well in his first season at Juve, and Igor Tudor is not so keen to work with him, so we expect him to leave the club soon.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, PSG

Donnarumma was the PSG hero as they won the Champions League last season and reached the final of the Club World Cup.

Without Kylian Mbappe, he is one of the players who ensured they have remained a top club, but the goalie has been told to leave.

PSG’s treatment of the Italian is shocking, but this is how football works, and we now expect to see him in the Premier League soon.

Marco Asensio, PSG

Asensio is another top player that PSG has asked to leave, despite his impressive performance while on loan at Aston Villa last season.

The Spaniard’s form helped the Villans reach the Champions League quarterfinal, and we expect several clubs to chase after him.

However, he is still clubless, and if he stays in Paris, he will not get game time this season.

Marc Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona

For a decade, Ter Stegen has been the main man at Barcelona, but as he has now fallen out with Hansi Flick, he has been asked to leave Barcelona.

The German wants to stay, but his big salary means he is one of the players that they have to offload, although he does not have any suitors at the moment.
