Strikers Liverpool can sign to replace Darwin Nunez

23/06/2025

It seems obvious now that Liverpool will replace Darwin Nunez in this transfer window after he struggled in Arne Slot’s first season.

The Uruguayan had been hopeful of doing well in the 2024/2025 season after struggling in the 2023/2024 term.

However, in his first two seasons at Liverpool, he had some brilliant moments and seemed to make progress.

When Jurgen Klopp decided to leave the club in the summer of 2024, the striker must have been one of the most worried players.

The German was in love with him and signed him as soon as he did well against Liverpool for Benfica in the Champions League in 2022.

Nunez is one of the most inconsistent players in the world, but on his good day, he will score a fantastic goal for the team.

Last term, he spent time on the bench while Slot trusted Luis Diaz, a winger, to play as his number nine.

The Dutchman did not seem impressed with the quality of the strikers at Anfield, with Diogo Jota also struggling to play.

Although Nunez knows how to score important goals, the striker misses too many clear cut chances and he is not consistent enough.

We expect him to leave this summer, and here are the possible replacements for him who can sell Liverpool tickets.

Alexander Isak, Newcastle United

If there is a striker in England who can help Liverpool sell more Premier League tickets, that is not Erling Haaland; that striker is Isak.

Over the last few seasons, the Swede has continued to prove he is made for the competition as he improves every term.

At some point last season, it seemed he would challenge Mohamed Salah for the top scorer award. He ended the term with 23 Premier League goals, his best since he arrived in England, and he surely will be a great fit for Liverpool.

Victor Osimhen, Napoli

One of the biggest surprises of the summer was Osimhen’s decision to turn down a big-money move to Saudi Arabia as he held out for a move to another European club.

The striker was on loan at Galatasaray last season, and he was in superb form, winning the league, cup and Golden Boot.

Osimhen scored 37 goals in all competitions for the Turkish team as they dominated their domestic scene. This includes six strikes in seven Europa League matches.

Galatasaray wants to keep him, but it is hard to think they can afford him, so Liverpool should make him the first top striker that Slot signs as their manager.

Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting Club

Gyokeres’ goalscoring record at Sporting Club has been ridiculous since he has been at the club for the last two seasons.

The striker has been linked with a move to the Emirates as they look to sell more Arsenal tickets, but the Gunners have acted really slowly in their bid to make him a member of their squad.

This could be good for Liverpool because a player who has 86 G/A in the league alone in the last two seasons will certainly be a hit at Anfield.

He will also not cost too much more than Liverpool will make from selling Nunez, so they need to act fast because he is also one of the strikers that Arsenal and Manchester United want to sign this summer.

Jonathan David, free agent

It is baffling that David was allowed to run down his contract at Lille because he was consistently one of the best strikers in Europe’s top five leagues when he played for Lille.

The Canadian was often linked with a move away from the club to Juventus, Arsenal, or Manchester United.

As a selling club, Lille was always open to cashing in on him, but he did not find a suitor and opted to run down his contract at the Ligue 1 club.

David is now a free agent and has been speaking to several clubs about joining them and continuing his career.

Liverpool faced Lille in the last Champions League, and he scored against the Reds, so they can tell he knows how to score.

While he is not as prolific as the other names on this list above him, David can score more and miss fewer open goals than Nunez has.

Benjamin Sesko, RB Leipzig

Sesko, who has been in talks with Arsenal, is another player who could compete in the Premier League next season.

The Gunners would love to add the Slovenian to their squad in this transfer window and have been speaking to RB Leipzig about a move for him.

However, Liverpool has been far more decisive in the window since the season ended, and the Reds could snap him up if they cannot agree on deals for their other target.

Sesko will not come cheap, and he is one of RB Leipzig's stars we have long tipped to be sold by the club for some good money.

However, at 22, he is younger than most of the other targets here, and he has huge potential, considering he still scored 18 G/A in a tough season for Leipzig.

Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus

Liverpool and Juventus have a very good relationship, and both clubs love to do business. Liverpool has signed two players from the Bianconeri in the last three summers and could add Vlahovic to their squad.

The Serbian’s contract at Juventus expires in the summer of 2026, so the Old Lady is desperate to offload him as soon as they can.

The striker is reluctant to sign a new deal with them because he needs to take a pay cut, and Liverpool can sign him cheaply.

However, if he continues to demand the same wage while not scoring the required number of goals, the Reds might be reluctant to splash the cash on the former Fiorentina man.

If Vlahovic agrees to slash his salary, he could be a nice striker for Liverpool to add to their squad.

Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa

If Liverpool wants an experienced striker who knows how to score in the Premier League, they might turn to Watkins.

The Aston Villa striker has been one of the best players in his position in the last few seasons and might fancy a new challenge.

In January, Arsenal tabled a bid for him, but Villa rejected it because they did not want to lose him midseason.

However, this summer will be a better time for any suitor to add him to their squad, and Liverpool should probably get their man.
