Can Bayern Munich go on another Bundesliga winning run?

21/07/2025

In the 2023/2024 season, we expected Bayern Munich to win their 12th consecutive Bundesliga crown in Germany.

The Bavarians were so dominant in those years that we never believed the run would come to an end.

Manager after manager kept their team winning, and they continued to work as hard as possible to make it happen.

Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Stuttgart, among other teams, tried to knock them off their perch and failed.

In the 2022/2023 season, Jude Bellingham’s final term in the Bundesliga, it seemed that run would come to an end as BVB showed great form.

Even fans who buy Bayern Munich tickets would have lost hope that their team would retain the crown after winning it for ten consecutive seasons.

That term, they had two managers, with Thomas Tuchel joining them mid-season following the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann was a promising manager, but he lost the dressing room in a chaotic season, and Bayern had given up on league success.

However, on the final day of that season, BVB were expected to win but did not, as Bellingham failed to start their last match due to injury.

Dropping two points in that match helped Bayern win the title, surprisingly, after they had won their game.

The cracks were already showing, and they sacked Tuchel after Bayer Leverkusen won the league in 2023/2024.

“Neverkusen” shocked everyone with one of the best title wins we have seen, achieving victory in both German and European football.

However, it did not come as much of a surprise because they had momentum and Bayern had lost theirs, which meant they needed to get it back.

Kompany restored pride in Bavaria

Bayern is one of the largest and wealthiest clubs in European football, yet many managers rejected the chance to be their coach when Tuchel left the job at the Allianz Stadium.

His departure did not put Bayern in a positive light because he had clashes with some of the board members, with fans also disputing the decision to allow him to leave the club.

Tuchel should have been shown more respect, and the coaches that Bayern tried to make their next manager, including Xabi Alonso, all rejected their approaches.

Bayern had to turn to Vincent Kompany to become their manager for the 2024/2025 season, a shock decision.

Kompany had been relegated as the coach of Burnley in the Premier League in the previous season and had been preparing for life in England’s second division when he got the call to coach in Bavaria.

He would not have believed his luck, but he was recommended by Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game.

Although Burnley failed to keep their place in the Premier League, they were one of the best teams to watch in England.

His very young team sold many Premier League tickets because of their thrilling performances, even against the top teams in the division.

Kompany’s side refused to change their style of play to find wins and continued to stick to their philosophy of how the game should be played.

This enabled them to win over so many fans who were sad to see them relegated, but he demonstrated that he is one of the managers to follow in the game, and Bayern gave him their job.

In Bavaria, he took over some of the world’s best players and was given a huge budget to work with, with a simple task of winning back the Bundesliga.

Bayer Leverkusen had kept most of the players that helped them win the league unbeaten in 2023/2024, but Bayern wanted the title back.

Kompany delivered and deserves all the praise for achieving that success, as he had many doubters who never thought he was good enough for the role.

This season would be a big test for him, but he has shown that he knows what is expected of him, and he will be successful if he maintains standards.

Bayern needs to spend money

Bayern is one of the richest clubs in European football, and they have some of the best players in the world.

In this transfer window, they have lost Leroy Sane and would need to replace him, while bolstering other parts of their squad.

Their current group can still retain the league crown if they do not strengthen it further, but the best clubs always have to improve their squads.

Teams like Bayern cannot just sign any player on the market because they have high standards, and they have been showing that with their targets.

Bayern wants to sign Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, and there is a chance that they might spend up to 80m euros on the Colombian.

Liverpool does not want to sell, but Bayern can snap him up if they offer a good fee, and that should be a template for their spending.

The Bavarians should look to add top players like him to their squad and ensure it is stronger than it was last term, even though the other teams are not as strong as they are this term.

The clubs that are likely to snatch the Bundesliga crown this season

With Xabi Alonso departing from Bayer Leverkusen, they have turned to Erik Ten Hag to lead their team this season, but he is not one of the coaches who could worry Bayern Munich.

However, Borussia Dortmund could be their main challenger as they have kept their main men, and Nico Kovac is a fantastic manager.

He won the title with Bayern Munich and would relish the chance to beat them to the crown in this campaign.

Eintracht Frankfurt has lost Omar Marmoush and could lose Hugo Ekitike, making it difficult to see them compete for the crown this season unless they replace both stars with exceptional players.

These are the clubs Bayern should be worried about the most, but RB Leipzig could finally win the title if they name a good manager, because they won’t have to play European football, which could help their players rest enough.
